ABOUT CUERNAVACA
|
CLIHC 2005 will take place in the city of Cuernavaca, México.
Cuernavaca is approximately 40 miles south of Mexico City but worlds apart in pace. At approximately 5,000 feet in altitude, it is some 2,500 feet lower and thus warmer. Magnificent views of the western flank of Popocatepetl Volcano can be seen on clear days. For a map of Cuernavaca click here.
World famous for its year round spring-like climate, Cuernavaca was the holiday choice of Aztec kings long before the Spanish conquest. Hernan Cortés followed that tradition and built a palace which still stands and houses the Historical Museum. The construction of the Cathedral was personally supervised by Cortés and housed Franciscan missionaries.

By plane:
Upon arrival at Mexico City's Airport, you can board a bus (Pullman de
Morelos) right outside the arrival terminal (exit on gate D) to Cuernavaca.
Buses depart daily every 40 minutes according to the following:
- From Mexico City International Airport to Cuernavaca: from 6:40 hrs. to 23:30 hrs.
- From Cuernavaca to Mexico City International Airport: from 3:40 hrs. to 20:01 hrs.

Cuernavaca is 85 km. far from downtown Mexico City and is reachable by
taking the “Autopista del Sol” (Sun Highway) for a 50 min. drive.
By bus:

| SOME OTHER TOURISTIC INFORMATION AND CLOSE ATTRACTIONS |
Cuernavaca is a city built on a series of hills. It is located just 53 miles from Mexico City in central Mexico. The balmy, spring-like, semitropical climate is a big draw for Cuernavaca, where Cortes built his own summer place in the 16th century. Cobblestone streets, museums, spectacular restaurants and hotels await you in this town known as “The City of Eternal Spring.” Most sites are centered on the central Plaza de Armas. Here, you will find sidewalk cafes, craft shops and vendors from neighboring villages, selling arts and crafts, leather goods and jewelry. Across the street is a smaller square that puts on free concerts most Thursday evenings under its colonial arcade. Other places of interest in Cuernavaca include the Borda
Gardens, the most visited place in the city. These spectacular gardens were designed in the late 18th century by a member of the Borda family for one of his relatives. A café and bookstore are also located in the gardens. Also, don’t miss the Diego Rivera murals in the Palacio de Cortes. Cuernavaca has culture, art, recreation, historical sights, plus, its popularity as a vacation spot has created quite a glitzy nightlife, as well. It makes a wonderful spot to base a central Mexico vacation, where you can take your time to explore all the city has to offer.
Tepoztlan is a small village 15 km. east from Cuernavaca with cobblestone streets hidden among beautiful sandstone monoliths. At sunset, these monoliths throw off a russet glow, turning the whole town into a magical place. With this almost mythical beauty, and being crowned by a mysterious, ancient pyramid, it’s no wonder that Tepoztlan has become a favored spot for practitioners of Yoga, meditation, astrology, crystal healing and herbal medicine. However, the New Age has struck a comfortable balance with traditional Mexico in Tepoztlan, and massive commercial development is kept out. The town is friendly and has colorful restaurants and shopping. The main attraction is the tiny Tepozteco Pyramid, probably of Aztec origin, that is perched high on top of a hill. Hundreds climb it every weekend, and although steep, the trail is not arduous (but be sure to wear comfortable shoes.) Near the summit, however, you will have to climb a ladder to see the delightful view over the valley below. Other attractions in Tepoztlan include a lively weekend market, the Mardi Gras and the pre-Lenten Carnival.

Finally, the Colonia Condesa is a mix of galleries, fashionable clothing shops, restaurants and sidewalk cafes, and is a perfect place to relax from a hectic day of sightseeing. Mexico City can be a bit overwhelming to first time visitors, but it is a fascinating place, where centuries upon centuries have crafted and shaped into the
metropolis it is today.

How to arrive to Tecnológico de Monterrey: Tecnológico de Monterrey is 6 km. far from Cuernavaca downtown and is reachable by different means:
Public Transportation: Tecnológico de Monterrey is reachable from Cuernavaca Downtown by means of buses number 14 and 18 (“Ruta 14” and “Ruta 18”).
Taxi: Taxi rate from Cuernavaca Downtown to Tecnológico de Monterrey should be around 40 Mexican Pesos. However, be sure to always arrange the price with the taxi driver before stepping on the cab since bargaining is consider a “national sport” in Mexico and may help you saving money.
